How to approach very fast movement in space

In a standard earth-like situations the fastest speed of movement a human can perceive is about 400 km/h. It means that a stone lying on a road 200m ahead will be approached in 1.8 sec. A lot of time to change direction and avoid crash.

Image you are traveling at the speed of 50 km/sec and you can see an asteroid 10 km ahead. You will hit it in 0.2 sec. Are you such fast?

The first, obvious resolution is to say – well, space is not for humans. Let computers to handle my spaceship. But then there’s not much to do during space flight.

Second approach is to amend pilot’s consciousness – to subjectively slow time for him, say 10 times. Then he will have 2 sec to react.

Your ship has six (6) engines: main-forward (installed on the back of the ship), reverse (in front of the ship), right, left, top and bottom. All engines can generate propulsion simultaneously. The acceleration vector is a sum (vector sum) of all individual trusts. Velocity of a ship changes according to this acceleration. Exactly like in Newton laws of physics.

Don’t forget about inertia – mass cannot change high velocity instantaneously.

How to control a ship:

  • mouse – move mouse cursor to change current ship orientation (rotate ship)
  • W  – main engine. Hold to turn main engine ON and generate forward force along current ship orientation (longitudinal axis). Double click to lock main engine in ON state and create constant propulsion. Click again to turn it OFF
  • S – back engine. The same as for W but for back engine generating backward force, opposite to current ship orientation. Use it to decrease speed or fly backward
  • A – right engine. Hold to generate force to the left along lateral axis. Double click does not work
  • D – right engine. Hold to generate force to the right along lateral axis. Double click does not work
  • Q – bottom engine. Hold to generate force to the top along vertical axis. Double click does not work
  • Z – top engine. Hold to generate force to the bottom along vertical axis. Double click does not work
  • P – click to turn on or off turbo mode. In turbo mode engines generate three times more power leading to almost 10g acceleration

The force generated after the engine is turned on is not at maximum from start on. It grows in time reaching maximum value after about 2 sec.

If you combine trust of two engines, i.e. forward and left in turbo mode the total acceleration will exceed 10g, which is a maximum acceleration a pilot can safely undergo for a long time. If experienced too long will provide to temporary blackout.
